Hawaii Preparatory Academy water polo standout Janelle Laros is this week’s West Hawaii Today Athlete of the Week.
Laros has been a goal-scoring machine for Ka Makani, which currently sit at 7-1 this season, most recently notching a pair of wins on Wednesday in Kona.
Laros, along with her Hawaii Prep teammates, couldn’t wait to get back in the pool to take a run at a BIIF title.
“We all have countdowns on our computers for the start of water polo season,” Laros said after a game earlier this season.
The senior’s best game of the season came last week, returning from a short layoff with a nine-goal performance against Konawaena. Laros — who was an All-BIIF honorable mention a year ago — plays the hole set, which requires a little more physicality that other spots in the pool.
“It’s a scrappy position,” Laros said. “You have to be aggressive.”
Led by Laros, the speedy Hawaii Prep squad has aspirations to capture a BIIF title, which will take knocking off seven-time defending champion Kamehameha. So far, the squads have split the season matchup, each getting a win.
The next slate of water polo games are scheduled for this weekend at Kona Aquatic Center.
